Full Text
The contempt manifested by Messrs. Madison & Co. for public opinion is truly remarkable. Let a man, in support of any of their projects, render himself unpopular in his own state; and he is immediately taken under the fostering wing of our patriotic administration.--We have seen a late instance of this in Gov. Tompkins, who has set the state of N. York in an uproar, but who it is said, has been amply rewarded for his loss of popularity by a snug office under the general government. And it now appears, that, since the Freemen of Massachusetts have determined on dispensing with Mr. Gerry's Services. the Intriguers talk of running him for the next Vice President. Successful, the patent republicans will forward their own office hunting views, while the modest Gerry will receive the price of his labor.
