From the Royal Magazine.

One evening, near the close of summer, when the last
traces of departing day had tinged the fleecy clouds in the
chambers of the west with faint but beautiful colours. I
took a solitary walk in the garden, and gazed with pleasure
on the expanded canopy of the skies, decked with a surpri-
sing number of glittering stars, while Cynthia with her
silver rays rendered every object delightfully pleasing.
Nor was the calmness of the evening disturbed; a gentle
breeze fanned the leaves, and wafted the odours of a thou-
sand flowers and plants. The serenity of the weather engaged me to
