NEW JERSEY REPUBLICANS.

They Endorse Phelps and Elect Delegates at Large—Other Conventions.

TRENTON, N. J., May 10.—The Republican State Convention met here yesterday at noon, and proved to be harmonious and orderly. There was not a break anywhere. There were no factional fights. The four slated candidates for delegates at large—Sewell, Griggs, Brewer and Halsey—were elected without opposition, no other names being presented. Senator Gardner of Atlantic was made chairman, and Mahlon Pitney of Morris, secretary, and Edward L. Anderson of Mercer, J. Herbert Potts of Hudson, Charles R. Bates of Camden, Charles W. Schanck of Monmouth, assistant secretaries.

The following resolution was adopted:

The Republicans of New Jersey are bound to call to the convention of this National Convention the name of one who is eminently fitted to lead the party in the next campaign, with an honorable record in foreign diplomacy, with a long experience as one of the leaders in the National Congress, wise in counsel and prompt in action. A publicist, and yet a man of affairs whose extensive business relations acquaint him with the wants of the people: an early persistent and recognized champion of the rights of labor, with a name known in all the States as the synonym of honesty and capacity, we commend him to the electors' vote of New Jersey, and believing him to be the strongest candidate in other doubtful States, present the name of William Walter Phelps.

Frederick Douglass, the colored orator, responded to an invitation to address the convention, and spoke of the emancipation of the slaves, and said that it was owing to the Republican party alone that he was a free American citizen. He spoke of the good works of the Republican party, how it has blotted out slavery, paid off the national debt, kept the public spirit alive and established protection.
