THE BRITISH TREATY.—The verdict of both countries may now be said to have been fairly made up and rendered with regard to the British Treaty, and, we think, we have never seen national justice, on both sides, more impartially administered. It is quite obvious that it is the best treaty that could have been made, under the circumstances, because the parties have each lost something of that for which each contended, and yet each has acquiesced in the ultimate decision as yielding something that may be considered an equivalent for the points thus lost. It has not been so much a shrewd bargain, as an honorable settlement—not so much an attempt to "drive a trade" as to adjust a long standing account on the best and fairest terms. Attempts have been made on the part of the press both in England and the United States, and with considerable acerbity both in Parliament and Congress, to cavil at the terms of the treaty, and object to its provisions, but overwhelming majorities of the Legislatures of both countries have signified their approval of its ratification, and the people of both countries undoubtedly agree with their representatives.

We trust, then, that the Treaty thus sanctioned, will be considered a step onward in the great work of pacification not only between Great Britain and the United States, but between all the states of the world. We have but little patience with those clamorous professing patriots who are always exulting in the prospect of bringing the nation into collision with some foreign power, and, especially, who are continually striving to excite angry feelings against our "father land" the land from whence we derive our language, laws, and many of the "best of our institutions"—a land for which, "with all its faults," it would be unnatural for us not to cherish a feeling of respect. An honorable peace with all the world, and particularly with Great Britain, is what is most conducive to our interests, and to our prosperity. Let all parties unite in those measures, in connexion with our foreign relations, which justice and honor demand, and all will be well.
