DID NOT RECEIVE LETTER

Sheriff Buford Says He Did Not Receive Any Letter As Stated in Letter to Mr. Chappell

In the last issue of The Herald and News reference was made to a letter which had been addressed to Magistrate Chappell and Constable Blease in which it was stated that a similar letter had been written to the sheriff a few days before and that he paid no attention to it. Sheriff Buford states that he has received no such letter and he cannot imagine why a statement would be made by anyone that he had.

The letter in question is at the office of The Herald and News, and is typewritten, and is dated "Newberry, S. C., Jan. 18, 1909." It bears the post mark at Newberry, S. C. "Jan. 19. 1 P. M.," and the address is typewritten on a slip of paper which is pasted on the envelope, and is as follows: "Mr. J. H. Chappell or Mr. C. G. Blease. Newberry, S. C. P. M. Please deliver it to the one that will get it the quickest."

The Herald and News does not desire to do Sheriff Buford any injury, or to publish any statement that would be calculated to do him injury. In fact he is a most excellent sheriff and there is scarcely an issue of The Herald and News printed that does not carry some statement bearing evidence of the fact of his efficiency as an officer. In the same issue from which the quotation from this letter was printed there was a statement in regard to the promptness with which he responded to a call of duty.

In quoting from the letter to Magistrate Chappell and Constable Blease the statement was made that it was an anonymous communication.
