Arrested at Vernal, Utah, For Theft and Have Been Positively Identified as the Murderers of Cashier Middaugh.
Vernal, Utah, Feb. 20.—(Special.)—Sheriff Horton and W. L. Walls of Carbon county, Wyo., have identified Albert L. Caldwell and David Fraughton, two men under arrest for theft here, as two of the men who participated in the Cody, Wyo., bank holdup last November.
Walls says he was within 15 feet of Caldwell when the latter shot Cashier Middaugh to death and that Fraughton was an accomplice to the robbery.
Both have confessed the theft for which they were arrested.
Sheriff Benton of Cody is expected to arrive in a few days to further identify the men. Both prisoners were raised in this county, and, although they have bad reputations, they have many relatives in this county, all of good repute.
The above announcement in the Denver Republican of yesterday will be of great interest to the citizens of this county for the reason that Carbon county's sheriff will be entitled to wear a very large feather in his cap. It is largely due to Sheriff Horton that the men were connected with the Cody affair after their arrest for theft.
W. L. Walls who went with the sheriff to identify these two men is a prominent attorney of Cody and one of the eye witnesses to the murder of Cashier Middaugh of the bank which was held up. Mr. Walls was brought here to take a look at A. S. James, who was recently captured near Laramie and brought back here to serve the balance of a term of three years in the penitentiary after having escaped from prison and been at liberty for several months. Mr. Walls at once decided that he was not the man. and Sheriff Horton, having almost positive information that the men at Vernal, Utah, were the men wanted, insisted that he go and see the men.
Sheriff Horton has been in possession of the clue for some weeks, but when he left here a few nights ago he left no word as to where he was going and no information concerning it was given out until the above dispatch appeared.
