150 POUNDS OF BRASS
John Allen Arrested on Charge of Steal-
ing That Amount
John Allen, a negro, was arrested by Officer McKnight yesterday afternoon for stealing 150 pounds of brass from the Southern railroad shops.
Mr. McKnight says that he found the negro in a clump of bushes some distance from the shops, and that he had all the brass in a sack and was loading it in a wagon belonging to the Alabama Ice company. He says the negro claimed that he had found the brass out there, and, feeling in need of a few dimes, was going to sell it.
For some time the police have suspected a band of thieves of systematically stealing brass from the various shops and foundries, and think Allen is one of them. Mr. McKnight believes that another negro had placed the brass in the bushes and that John Allen was to take it away.
The amount of brass found in the sack is worth about $20.
