The American party—so called—met in convention on the 2d inst. By extra exertions, and through the double-delegation system, they managed to get quite a respectable convention, in point of numbers.

Their vindictive feelings towards those who have had the independence to leave their ranks within the past twelve months burst forth at the very outset. Mr. Dibble, the temporary chairman, took occasion to remark before taking his seat, that if there were any persons present like Gen. Estell, Churchman or Ryland, who had acted with them on like occasions, and then gone over to the enemy, that they might then leave. Shouts of applause greeted the speech, says the Union.

There was much of this kind of talk—a sort of dragoning the wavering into submission. There was a Mr. E. B. Drake, from Tuolumne, elected a delegate, but who had since joined the Democrats. This was considered very wrong on the part of Drake, but their feelings were much mollified when it was ascertained that they had his proxy to work with.

The double delegation trick came near producing some difficulty.

The following nominations have been made.

For Congress—B. C. Whitman, of Solano; A. B. Dibble, of Nevada.

For Clerk of Supreme Court—John Skinner, of Sacramento.

For State Superintendent of Public Instruction—Horace P. Janes, of San Francisco.

The Union in speaking of the above nominations says: As a whole, we cannot believe that the party has acquired any great distinction in its nominations. It has not presented as strong a ticket this year as it might have done.

The same paper, in speaking of the nominees for Congress, says: "They are gentlemen of good character, and youthful enough to answer the purpose of Young America, and to secure the continuance of a respectable share of inexperience in our national representation."
