The first world series was played between the Providence team and the Metropolitans in 1884.
Providence won three games and the series was over.
In 1887 when Detroit won the world championship, they played 14 games against St. Louis,
and Detroit won 10 games in the series. In 1889 New York played Brooklyn nine games.
winning six games and losing three. During the seasons 1893, 1894, 1895, 1896 and 1897, when the National league had 12 clubs, the winner and the runner-up would compete in a play-off for the Temple cup, offered by a Mr. Temple, an officer in the league.
Modern World Championships
After the Temple cup had been withdrawn, there were no world championship games played until the present American league and National league resumed the series in 1903, when Boston of the American league, and Pittsburgh of the National league, met in a series.
Boston won five games of the eight played. Since then, excepting in 1904, games have been played every year. President Brush of the National league would not give his permission for New York to play the Boston Americans that year.

The American league champions won world championships for a four-year period 1910 to 1913, inclusive, and repeated again from 1915 to 1918, inclusive, making seven out of eight world championships from 1910 to 1918, the only National league team to break the continuity was the Boston Braves of 1914, when they took four straight games from the Athletics to establish a new record.
During the last 10 years, the American league has been represented by only three teams, New York, Philadelphia and Washington, respectively.
