Full Text
The Connecticut Herald has put the subject of a Congressional Caucus on the right ground. It is Aristocracy; and should be called by its true name. Why should the members of Congress select a man for President? What right have they to do it, more than the Judges of the Supreme Court, or the officers of the Army? It is an attempt of the few, to wrest the exercise of power from the many. It is a contest between a combination of Office-Holders on the one side and the People on the other. Let its true character be known and there will be no fear of the result.
It is possible-nay very probable- that the Candidate selected by a Caucus, will be one who deserves the high office to which he is recommended. But this will by no means diminish the offence of those, who seek to procure his election by such means Louis Bonaparte was a very worthy man and made a very good Magistrate in Holland, but this was small consolation to the Dutch for the loss of their liberties. We are opposed to a Caucus of the Members of Congress upon principle, and without any reference to the candidate who may gain, or lose by such an assembly.-Portsmouth Journal.
