PRESIDENT ROOSEVELT AND GOV. HUGHES CLASH

Former Gov. Odell forces Roosevelt friends to line up against Hughes and latter announces his candidacy for president against Taft

(Special Dispatch to Daily Alaskan)

Albany, May 13—The sensation of the political situation was sprung Saturday night when former Gov. B. B. Odell, as a member of the Republican state central committee, introduced a resolution declaring that the committee favored the nomination of Gov. Charles E. Hughes for president and pledging the state of New York for him in the next national convention.

The resolution was forced onto the table by a combination of the opposition to Gov. Hughes and President Roosevelt's personal following. The latter element has been supporting the governor in his efforts toward reform. Immediately after the tabling of the resolutions favoring the candidacy of Gov. Hughes for president the Taft workers became active throughout the Empire state.

Hughes Announces Candidacy

This morning Gov. Hughes added to the complications of the situation in New York by announcing his candidacy for the Republican presidential nomination.

Roosevelt in Towering Rage

Washington, D.C., May 13—President Roosevelt is in a towering rage because of the developments in the New York state political situation. He says he is glad the Hughes resolutions were tabled, and that former Gov. Odell is a base ingrate.

States Lining Up

Washington, May 13—Already the various states are lining up for the coming Republican convention. According to the best information received here the states of Missouri, Oklahoma and Arkansas will be for the renomination of President Roosevelt by the next Republican national convention; Indiana will be for Vice-President Fairbanks and Illinois and Iowa for Secretary Taft.

Ohio is claimed by both Taft and Senator Foraker. The southern states will probably be for Senator Foraker as first choice and Vice-President Fairbanks second.
