CITRUS STYLE SHOW WILL BE BIGGEST EVENT
Plans Near Completion For Entertainment And Educational Features Of Mission Fiesta

MISSION, Dec, 26-Preliminary plans for the series of entertaining and educational events which will form the program of the Rio Grande Valley's Texas Citrus Fiesta when it opens in Mission January 12, are nearing completion, it was announced this week by E. E. Marburger, general chairman. All signs point toward the 1940 fiesta being one of the best in the annual series with local and outside supporters more enthusiastic than ever before, the chairman reported.

Homage will be paid to the Valley's greatest industry throughout the three-day program, starting with the coronation of Miss Ferne Willingham, Harlingen, as Queen Citriana VI, with a dramatic pageant on Thursday night, January 11, followed by a Queen's Ball through to the last event on the Sunday night program.

One of the most colorful events staged in the Valley each year and, in fact, the nation, is the citrus style show which will be repeated on Friday night, January 12 at the high school athletic field. Seats will be arranged for the 6,000 spectators who are expected to see the 3 valley beauties who will lend glamor to the Valley-grown citrus and other agricultural products.

Newsreel companies with national circulation have requested, and been granted the privilege of filming the novel style parade.

Growers in the Mission area have pledged themselves to make the 1940 citrus exhibits surpass all others staged in the first citrus fetes. Glorification of citrus in every phase will provide the keynote for the exhibit, as in other features of the fiesta.

The Parade of Oranges, opening event for the first full day's program will introduce a new idea in parades, in that each Valley community will be assigned a separate section, headed by float on which will ride the duchess from that respective city.

Among entertainment features also planned for the celebration will be the midget auto races to be staged each of the three days at the American Legion Speedway, a children's parade Saturday morning an outstanding floral exhibit, an antique and hobby show, a golf tournament and fruit packing contests. Valley Boy Scouts will join with Mission troops for a camporee during the fete and will assist in parade formations as well as conduct first aid demonstrations and stage craft exhibits.
