Full Text

Aug. 6. The Parliament of Paris having on the 13th of last month resolved to make fresh representations to the King about the Edict that prolongs for two years the doubling of the poll tax, and levying the third twentieth penny; three days after he sent for the first President, and two other Presidents, and spoke to them to the following purport;

"After the answer I made to the representations of my Parliament, I could not expect from them new delays in the execution of My Orders. I have sent for you to tell you, That I will have my Parliament proceed forthwith to register my Declaration: And I order you to come to morrow, immediately after your deliberation, to give me an account thereof." Tell my Parliament, that if they demur again, I shall find means to make them obey Me."

The 17th, the First President having communicated these orders of the King, it was resolved that they should beseech his Majesty to prolong the supplies in question for one year only, and this too upon certain conditions; which resolution having been reported to the King by the First President, his Majesty said, "I shall acquaint the Parliament with my intentions."

The 20th, the Parliament had orders to prepare for receiving, at ten o'clock next morning, the King's orders, sitting in his bed of justice. Upon which they immediately got every thing ready in the Grand Chamber for the ceremony; and all the members having assembled in St. Lewis's Chamber, previously protested against every thing that might be done the next day contrary to the laws of the Kingdom, and the good of the State.

The 21st the King accompanied by the Dauphin, came to hold his bed of justice, and caused the declaration to be registered as he would have it; but the next day the Parliament entered a protest in their books against the transaction of the 21st, the contents of which protest are not yet known.
