POETRY.

FROM THE PETERSBURG INTELLIGENCER.

GOSPEL MELODIES.

This night shalt thou be with me in Paradise.

Beside the dying thief he hung
Upon th' accursed tree,
His soul with mortal anguish wrung
To set the sinner free.
Ev'n then the Lord of Glory gave
An instance of his power,
From sin and sinful hell to save
In such a trying hour!
No pangs that rent his guiltless heart,
While mockers round him stood,
Could bid him from that love depart,
He came to seal with blood:
Lord! said the dying thief, the thorn
That stains with blood thy face,
Shall soon forsake thee, and this scorn
Be lost in matchless praise!
Saviour! I bless the precious doom
Which now I share in thee!
But when unto thy kingdom come,
Then Lord remember me!
The dying Lamb renewed the light,
That beams from gracious eyes,
And answered, "Thou shalt be, this night
With me in Paradise!"
