Full Text

Decision Concerning Public Schools.

San Francisco, March 14.—Attorney-General W. H. H. Hart has rendered an opinion in a matter which for months has greatly agitated many counties of the State, particularly Stanislaus and Merced. There has been quite a concerted endeavor on the part of many people in those counties to extend the usual primary and grammar school education from nine to eleven years. The Attorney-General has declared that it is illegal to increase the term to any period in excess of that fixed by law. He finds no just objection to the introduction of new studies, but they must be introduced without interfering with the length of the school period as now fixed.
