JACKIE NOVATNEY
Pictured above is Miss Jackie Novatney, Elks and Emblem Club Fourth of July queen candidate whose picture failed to appear with the other candidates last week.
Jackie asked: "Gee, was it so bad it broke the camera?"
No, just some of our weird typography, Jackie. Here you are in a nice, new cut right from the Ketchikan News' very excellent scanograving department.
WRANGELL READY
FOR BIG FOURTH
CELEBRATION
Starting with the Coronation Ball tonight at the ANB Hall, Wrangell was prepared for a big Fourth of July celebration this week end.
Street Superintendent Dale Miller and his crew washed down Front Street and put up the flags this week, making the town spick and span for the annual gala occasion.
Stores will remain open tomorrow but will be closed on Monday.
The parade will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday and will be followed with an afternoon of races with the fireworks display in the evening. Monday will be boat races, ball games, tug-of-war and other events.
For complete program turn to Page Two of this newspaper.
Of the following girls, one will be named queen and the other her attendants at the Coronation Ball, starting at 11 o'clock tonight: Doris Kuntz, American Legion and Auxiliary; Sylvia Casey, United Trollers and Auxiliary; Fern Skulstad, Redmen and Pocahontas; Jacqueline Novatney, Elks and Emblem Club; Juanita Stokes, Cannery Workers Union.
"We're all set to go," said Mrs. Alf Erickson, chairman of the Fourth of July committee.
"We hope everyone turns out to enjoy it."
AWARD ON DISPLAY
AT CAMPBELL BROS.
The grand award of the Fourth of July Queen Contest, a bed davenport and matching swing rocker, are on display in the window of Campbell Bros. Store, the Fourth of July committee announced this week.
PLEASE KEEP CARS
OFF FRONT STREET
SUNDAY AFTERNOON
To make way for the annual Fourth of July parade and the races following, car owners are asked to keep their vehicles off Front Street from the time of the parade at 1:30 p.m. Sunday afternoon until after the races.
"Your cooperation will be greatly appreciated," said Street Superintendent Dale Miller. "We don't want to have to move them, and you'll be giving the Fourth of July committee a break in putting on the big annual event."
CHURCHES TO HOLD
UNION SERVICE ON
FOURTH OF JULY
The Presbyterian and Episcopal churches are joining together again this year for their annual Fourth of July service. The service will begin at 11 a.m., at the Presbyterian Church.
Those in charge said that if the weather permits, the service will be held outside on the lawn, otherwise it will be held inside the church. William Sexton, student pastor of the Presbyterian Church, will preach. The open offering will be used by the Wrangell Ministerium to underwrite the annual Daily Vacation Bible School that is to begin July 12, and last for two weeks.
