The cry has been, that the majority of the last Legislature were wedded to a man, and were wrapped up in a name, and that such were the motives of those writers who came forward to expose corruption. The cry of the Reedites, Dupontites and M'Laneites resounded through State, that Dr. Black was the only man the majority had in view for the Senator to the Congress of the U. S. This was uniformly denied. The writers at that time declared they contended, not for men, but principles, and though Dr. Black's name came forward incidentally in the discussion, it was only done to show he had been wantonly traduced & scandalized: for at that time the declaration Dr. Black has made in your last paper, was well known to us, and we were well assured Dr. Black had no intention of being considered a candidate for the next Legislature. We mention this to show that the faction opposed to the majority, caught at straws, and made use of assertions which they well knew were untrue.
