Lt. Col. Brewster Heads Station

Lieutenant Colonel Hugh C. Brewster, formerly of Burbank, is the new commander at the El Centro Marine Air Station, taking the place of Lieutenant Colonel Karl T. Voelter, who is now in the South Pacific.

The new station commander was executive officer at the Miramar Marine Corps Air Station after his return from a tour of duty overseas. He served on the western front during World War No. 1 and for action with the United States army at St. Mihiel, Verdun, and the Argonne, he was awarded the Distinguished Cross.

IN SOUTH PACIFIC

As a Marine officer in World war No. 2, Colonel Brewster served in the South Pacific area, including Hawaii, Guadalcanal and New Georgia. He received a letter of commendation from the commander of aircraft in the Solomon islands.

Prior to World war No. 2, Colonel Brewster was an inspector for the Civil Aeronautics authority. Colonel and Mrs. Brewster have four children: Hugh, Jr., 24; Edgar, 22; James, 17, and Barbara, 11.

He is a graduate of Texas Christian university at Fort Worth, Texas, and is a member of the Masonic lodge.

VOELTER WRITES

Imperial Valley residents were interested to learn that Colonel Voelter, commanding officer at the El Centro Marine Air Station for approximately two years, is now in the Pacific area. He wrote friends as follows:

". . . Tell El Centrans that they are a bunch of really swell people. Few places have I been stationed where the local people were so genuinely gracious as they were in El Centro and I will always sing their praises."

Colonel Voelter's 28 years of flying experience will stand him in good stead now. Prior to joining the Marine Corps in 1931 he was sales promotion manager for the Curtiss-Wright Flying Service, during which time he organized and operated the Curtiss-Wright racing team, then composed of the nation's best-known racing pilots. He competed nationally and has a unique collection of air race trophies.

Mrs. Voelter is making her home in El Centro while her husband is overseas.
