A coalition of parties is certainly a very desirable thing. If the federalists will cease abusing the administration, and will unite in supporting republican men and republican measures, this great work may be effected; but not otherwise.
IN the last Virginia Gazette, to prove his consistency, and his unfeigned attachment to union and good will between the two great political parties, the editor has inserted a piece, signed "Investigator;" in which the present republican administration is most outrageously abused, and the eagle of the United States represented as alighting on a dunghill!
The federal newspapers, if they mean to convince us of their reconciliation to the government, should avoid conduct of this kind:
WE believe that the great body of the federalists being honest men and friends of their country, are in fact converted to the republican side of the question; and therefore ought to change their denomination.
OUR observations concerning federal principles are applicable only to the disciples of the old school; who still believe in the constitutionality of alien and sedition laws; who still approve the course pursued in the days of John Adams; and wish the present administration to be fashioned according to the model of the last. With men of the first description we are cordially disposed to unite in every respect; but, with those of the latter, in the defence of our country only; not in their principles and opinions.
