NEW YORK -(ANP)--Torrence Dewer Jones, 53, of the Jones Realty Corporation at 736 East 165th St. in the Bronx, charged with swindling Harlemites of over $50,000 in phony deals to obtain apartments, is under arrest on charges of grand larceny.
Arrested in a furnished room in which he lived, Jones admitted taking commissions ranging from $200 to $500 to get apartments, but nobody ever got the apartments. Police said Jones would make excuses after collecting the money when pressed to deliver. If the objections were strenuous, Jones "paid back" the commissions saying the "deal" had fallen through, they said.
Six months ago, Jones is said to have left town when things got too hot. He was traced through Philadelphia, New Jersey and back here again. In 1948 he was placed on probation for similar operations after he promised to repay the commissions solicited.
Detectives said he repaid about $1000 to $1500 he had squeezed out of people needing apartments.
The specific complaint that caused his arrest was he took $280 from Geraldine Gross, a nurse on the promise of an apartment. It turned out that the apartment was occupied by tenants who didn't plan to move at all the woman said.
