AS TO CIRCULATION

Shall we infer from a seven-line paragraph in yesterday's edition of the Helena Independent that our excellent contemporary finds itself disposed to take up with the STANDARD the question of relative circulation? That conclusion on the part of the Independent would be gratifying to this office. The STANDARD has tried to enlist its Butte contemporaries in this sort of thing, but our Butte friends cannot be persuaded.

On occasion we have said that, leaving the STANDARD out of account, the circulation of the Independent is larger by many hundreds than that of any other morning newspaper in Montana. That is true; and it is also true that the STANDARD's circulation is now day by day, as it has been for many months, more than double the total daily circulation of the Independent.

It will give us pleasure to respond to the slightest intimation of a wish on our Helena contemporary's part to test the honesty of this assertion.
