Shirley Simmons, First Woman to Fly Solo, Alaska

To Mrs. Shirley Simmons, wife of the well-known Sheldon Simmons of the Alaska Air Transport, goes the singular honor of being the first girl to fly solo in Alaska. Mrs. Simmons took off from the transport hangar in the Gastineau Flying Club's Aeronca seaplane at 4 o'clock yesterday afternoon, and flew alone for ten minutes before returning, making a perfect three-point landing.

A large crowd had gathered at the hangar by the time Mrs. Simmons returned, and participated in the official "christening" ceremony, which follows every first solo flight.

Mrs. Simmons was permitted to don a pair of overalls for the official dip.
