Her Dream O'er.

Never Again Will Queen Lil Sit on the Throne - General Belief That Restoration is Abandoned for All Time.

WASHINGTON, Jan. 16. - Mr. Holman expresses the general sentiment in saying, as he did Monday, that one thing was certain, viz.: The restoring of Liliuokalani to the throne is for all time abandoned, not only in executive but congressional circles. "It will never be heard of again."

Mr. Holman adds: "My view is that the United States should now recognize the provisional government as the existing and lawful government of Hawaii. We should then proceed to secure by treaty with the provisional government an agreement which will guarantee the islands against interference by foreign powers. It would be in effect a protectorate, yet it should not be a protectorate in the sense of binding the two countries to mutual offensive and defensive measures. The difference in size between the countries would preclude this, but it should insure us proper facilities for coaling stations and assure them of our co-operation in their advancement and our determination to keep them secure from foreign interference."

There is a general disposition to drop this malodorous mess for the present, and await the report of the committee on foreign affairs, which is going on with the investigation, and turn attention meanwhile to the tariff, income tax and pressing financial problems, as well as the consideration of the proposed repeal of the federal election laws. Very few people can discuss with any patience the Hawaiian episode.
