Southern Univ. Approved For Summer Veterans Program

Baton Rouge, La., May 26-Southern University has been approved by the Veterans Administration student affiliate recreation trainee program, beginning this summer.

The program, which emphasizes corrective therapy and hospital recreation is based upon the current and anticipated needs of the Veterans Administration for adequately trained professional recreational personnel in hospitals and domicilaries.

According to governmental officials, the students will provide supplementary service to veterans and contribute to the continued refinement of station recreation programs through their close relationships with employed staff.

A. W. Mumford, director, Division of Health, Physical Education and Recreation, Southern University, said, "This new opportunity applies to students majoring in recreation, hospital recreation, recreational therapy or recreation in rehabilitation, and not to other student majors, who might participate in Veterans Administration station recreation programs, such as music, theatre, arts and physical education."

Graduates from the recreation department may now apply for the special training which will be given at Tuskegee Institute, Tuskegee, Alabama. Those who qualify will receive expense free training.

The recreation department at Southern, which was created three years ago, under the direction of Clifford Seymour, will award its first degree during the commencement, this season.
