Chatham Chief Of Democrats Nixes GOP Bid

SAVANNAH, Ga. (UD-The chairman of the Chatham County Democratic Executive Committee refused Friday to permit a Republican to enter the Democratic primary in quest of nomination to the Legislature.

Bob Barker vetoed attorney Howard Jarrott's request, saying: "I will not qualify him. He is an admitted Republican, and I could not do so conscientiously."

The attorney snapped back: "There's not a hair's breadth of difference in the Democratic and Republican parties."

Jarrott said he had no doubt that he could qualify if he really wanted to. He added that he may oppose the Democratic candidate in the November general election.

A former chairman of the Chatham County Young Republican Club, Jarrott contended he could legally "change colors" and enter the primary as many Democratic friends "urged me to."
