THE SERAPHS

A light that blinded like the sun
smote with a sudden flare of day
Along the avenues that won
Into the destined way.

It was a shimmer and a glow
A flash from winging figures flow
From shadows and dim mist afar
Into the perfect form of star

Upward we turned our startled eyes
Expecting to see them come.
A band of seraphs from the skies.
But here amid the scum
Of sordid town and roaring street
We turned and saw them clear.
Walking upon as mundane feet
As ever did appear.

But the longer that we gazed we saw
Between their shoulders grow
The wings of seraphim and round
Their heads a bright halo.

And holy was the applauding sound
That followed where they went-
Ever among the hosts of men
With a burning light in their eyes
Twins of our earthly sacrament-
Service and Sacrifice.
