Eastford Acquires
Historic Property
Two of the more historic and outstanding parcels of home realty in Union, both located at the Center and adjoining each other, have changed ownership in the acquiring by Charles P. Barrington of Eastford, a leading lumber operator in eastern Connecticut, of the Marcy Homestead and the property of Mrs. Lucille Sellew of Hartford, used mainly as a summer home for years.
It is understood the purchaser plans to utilize one for his own occupancy, utilize the other for the tenancy of employees.
Both buildings are among the older ones in town, the Marcy homestead to the pre-Civil War era. The Sellew building dates back to the middle of the last century. The Marcy homestead was acquired from the heirs of Merrick Marcy, who, during the early and mid-eighties operated a shoe factory in Lake Mashapaug District, for years the town's leading industry, giving employment for many local folk and those from neighboring towns. He also was proprietor of a large general store at the Center, both factory and store now long non-existent. Both home properties affected in the recent transfer long were landmarks to the innumerable motorists traveling over old Route 15, before the new Cross Parkway by-passed the Union Center. Transfer of the homestead marks passing of the last of the once extensive Marcy family realty holdings in town.
