Assault and Battery.--An article in the last issue of the Observer, reflecting upon Mr. J. G. Doll, covertly insinuated that he had made money by his failure in business. This was the foundation of an altercation which took place in front of the Red Bluff Hotel, last night, between Mr. Baker, editor of the Observer and Mr. Doll. Mr. Baker denied that Mr. Doll's name was mentioned in the article alluded to, and after some language on the part of Mr. D., more emphatic than complimentary, he gave Mr. B. a welt with his cane over the head, which he followed up by squaring off as if about to appeal to the "Hyer" law. But his antagonist had already beat a "masterly retreat," at a flight of speed that "Norfolk" need not have been ashamed of. Mr. Doll was subsequently brought before Justice Galvin, and plead guilty to the charge of assault and battery, whereupon the Justice fined him one dollar, and the majesty of the law was vindicated.--Red Bluff Independent.
