Full Text

New-Haven. Feb. 16. Vigilance. It begins to be felt, as one of the effects of our present tariff system, that a much closer vigilance is required for the protection of the revenue than formerly, not only upon our internal frontiers but along our coasts and bays. Hitherto a single vessel has been found sufficient to guard the entrance and the shores of Long-Island Sound, but has now become necessary to double that force, and the cutter Vigilant, Capt. Cahoone, Jr. has been appointed to aid in that service. She is to cruise between New-York and Connecticut river, and to receive her supplies at this port and proposals for furnishing the same are advertised for by our Collector. It is said that smuggling of British goods, to a considerable extent, has been carried on within the region specified, and that a more efficient naval police has become indispensable.-Herald.

Event Details

Effects of the tariff system require closer vigilance for revenue protection along coasts and bays, including Long-Island Sound. A single vessel was formerly sufficient, but now the force is doubled with the cutter Vigilant, Capt. Cahoone, Jr., appointed to cruise between New-York and Connecticut river, receiving supplies at New-Haven. Smuggling of British goods has been considerable in the region, necessitating more efficient naval police.
