ALASKAN TERMS AND PHRASES
For the benefit of subscribers & readers of the Chitina Herald who cannot define some of our Alaskan phrases, we are publishing in every other issue of the Herald, as we are doing now, the words which are most troublesome to understand.
BEDROCK - The solid rock or the clay, and gravel surface covering. A term used in the placer mining industry.
CACHE - A structure commonly set on four posts above the ground and used as a storehouse for meats and fruit supplies or other materials.
CHECHAHCO (chechahco). A newcomer, a tenderfoot.
CLEANUP - A term used in the process of removing the gold from the sluice boxes and cleaning it with black sand or some other heavy material.
DUST - Placer gold in native or natural state. A term seldom used at the present time.
GEE POLE - A short pole attached to the front of a freight dog sled and used by the driver in keeping the sled on the trail.
THE INTERIOR - A term used to designate the region North of the Alaska range of mountains.
MUKLUKS - Footwear made by the aboriginal population. Chiefly the Aleuts and Eskimos. Waterproof mukluks, either short or extending to the hips, are made from oiled seal skin from which the hair has been removed.
MUSH - An expression used to set a team of dogs in motion. Also for travel on foot as, he mushed from Chitina to Cordova.
OUTSIDE OR BELOW - Meaning the states, as he has gone outside or below for the winter.

OVERFLOW - Water standing or flowing over a solid top of ice. Dangerous to sled mushers.
PARKA - An outer garment, usually knee length, having no opening front or back. Slips on over the head. A hood is attached to the main part with an opening for the face. Made usually from squirrel or reindeer.
POTLATCH - An Indian gathering at which gifts are exchanged and a general good time had by all. Giving is usually collective, altho some of the gifts are exchanged between individuals.
SIWASHING - Camping without shelter, such as tent.
SOURDOUGH - An oldtimer. Particularly one who has lived in the interior and has seen the river ice come and go.
TOWLINE - The long cable by means of which individual dogs on a team are attached by means of a harness.
TUNDRA - A treeless plain, characteristically of Arctic and Sub-Arctic regions.
