Lawson Says
Full Democracy
Red Antidote

RALEIGH, N. C.—Attorney Belford V. Lawson of Washington, D. C. General President of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, called full democracy "the best antidote for Communism" as he delivered the "Education for Citizenship" address recently in Greenleaf Auditorium of Shaw University. Attorney Lawson, who represents 120,000 Alpha men throughout the country, spoke before a large audience which included nearly 100 members of the fraternity, representing the Raleigh graduate chapters at Shaw University and St. Augustine's College.

Characterizing the state as the servant of all the people," the dynamic fraternal leader challenged his hearers to "demand absolute and unequivocal equality in every walk of life." Attorney Lawson scored those who attempt to excuse segregation. "There is no such thing as separate but equal," he declared and added, "we cannot stand the swell tide of history as long as there are two kinds of citizenship." On the subject of segregation in education he stated. "If the curricula were the same, if teachers were equally paid, if brick by brick the buildings were the same, we still ought to have the right to go to any publicly supported institution."
