POET'S CORNER.
SONG translated from AMADIS de GAULE.
As soon as the golden Age was o'er,
And Saturn banished from the Skies,
His Sons the brothering Empire tore,
And grappled for the mighty Prize.
Fortune to each assigned his Share,
Fraternal Enmity to close;
Jove's was the Region of the Air,
By Thunder guarded from his Foes.
To Neptune's Portion of Command,
Devolved all Ocean's billowy Forms;
The forked Tritons armed his Hand,
Circl'd with Whirlwinds and with Storms.
At last to grizzly Pluto fell
A Realm where Villainy abounded;
To fortify his Throne of Hell
The Furies shriek'd, and Styx surrounded.
This nether Globe unheeded seem'd
Abandon'd to the God of Love;
Yet slighting of the Boon he dream'd,
And soar'd with venturous Flight above,
Waging victorious War with Jove,
Undauntedly to Heaven he came,
And from their lofty Stations drove
The Thunder's Burst; the Lightning's Flame.
To Ocean's President then flew,
And burnt the Trident and his Storms,
Nor fear'd in Pluto's Realms to view
The blazing Vault and shadowy Forms.
Thus, O restless Love! to thee,
In earliest Times, the Pow'r was lent
To conquer Heaven, and Hell, and Sea
And each rebellious Element.
Well may thy much frequented Shrine
With earthly Tributes ever smoke,
When we behold the Powers divine
Bow with Obedience to thy Yoke.
