A DELAWARE SOCIAL SENSATION—THE INTENDED BRIDE AT HOME.
WILMINGTON, DEL., May 20.—An elopement which took place last night at Mount Cuba, a summer resort twelve miles from this city, is creating considerable excitement, owing to the high social position of the young lady, she being a daughter of James Wilson, a well-known mill-owner.
The young man whose name is coupled with the escapade is Leal, a young Baltimorean, who was in the employ of Mr. Wilson as a farm-hand. As soon as the relations between the pair were discovered, Mr. Wilson objected to the young man paying attention to his daughter and forbade him the house. Love laughs at locksmiths, however, as well as the frowns of parental authority, and the young couple met clandestinely and had frequent interviews, culminating in an elopement during the absence of the members of Mr. Wilson's household. The young lady left a note for her parents, in which she stated that she intended to marry Leal, but the parents returned sooner than she expected, and a brother of the girl at once started in pursuit. The couple were overtaken a few miles from this city, and Leal, at once realizing that capture was inevitable, forsook his fair inamorata, jumped from the carriage, and started on the run across the country. In order to accelerate his speed several shots from a revolver were fired at him, all of which failed to hit him, and he succeeded in making his escape. The young lady was escorted back to her home, a wiser if not a happier girl. Leal will be charged, if captured, with attempted abduction, but so far he has eluded arrest. In the mean time fashionable circles here are much interested in the nice subject for gossip which has been furnished by the flight of the couple.
