WILL WAR RID US
OF BRIDGES?
(Tulare Advance-Register)
It is an ill wind that blows no one good. Even a war sometimes may bring a small blessing in disguise.
Take, for instance, the case of the notorious Harry Bridges, self appointed maritime leader, who has been carrying on a campaign of strife and trouble along the waterfronts of America and at this time is fighting government efforts to deport him to his native country of Australia.
With his native land having volunteered to join England in the war against Germany, and with his "adopted" Russia having doublecrossed England and joined with the Nazis, Harry Bridges is now behind the proverbial eight ball.
Will he return to his homeland as all other citizens in time of war, or will he continue to stay in America and strive to bring about the "revolution" so fervently wished for by his Moscow superiors? What is your guess?
In either event, the American government certainly has good reason to order his deportation and incidentally institute similar investigation and possible action in the cases of 7,000,000 aliens from all other nations now residing illegally within our borders. Should a large portion of these be returned, either voluntarily or through compulsion, as a result of the war situation, the effect would be highly beneficial in the decrease of relief and unemployment.
The government action in the Bridges case, as well as those of countless others living here illegally, will be watched with a great deal of interest in view of the vital, new situation.
