Yesterday arrived here the Province Ship of War, King George, Capt. Hallover, having on board his Excellency our Governor.

The King George sailed from hence about a Fortnight ago in Company with the Massachusetts Tender upon a Visit to our Eastern Frontier, which has been lately threatened with an Attack from the French and Indian Enemy: and after having left Stores and Reinforcements at the several Forts and Garrisons there, which arrived very seasonably, the Ship proceeded on the outside of Penobscot Bay to Mount Desart, the designed Rendezvous of the Enemy: while the Tender went thro' the Bay, being ordered after reconnoitring to meet the Ship there.

The Tender, as was expected, in her Passage thro' the Bay discovered two large Parties of the Enemy consisting of French and Indians, with Battoes and Canoes, one on Long Island, and the other at Nakeeg Point.

Not far from the point, a single Canoe with two or three Indians appearing, a Boat from the Tender with Eleven Men, contrary to repeated Cautions, and with more Spirit than prudence, pursued the Canoe beyond the Covert of the Tender's Cannon; when a large Battoe full of Men, and a great Number of Canoes suddenly pushing out from all parts of the Shore, surrounded and took the Boat with all the people on board; among whom were Lieut. Saunders, and one Harris.

As soon as the Tender had joined the Ship they attempted for Several Days to enter Penobscot Bay in Company on its Western Side, but were prevented by unfavourable Winds.

The Tender will continue for some Time on our Eastern Coast, to act as the Circumstances of that Frontier shall require; and such Dispositions have been made for its Security, as it is hoped will encourage the Inhabitants to exert themselves for the Support of their Settlements, and frustrate the Designs of the Enemy.
