Full Text
The full Board convened yesterday at the City Hall, and proceeded to grant a license to the person whose name follows:
John Roache, No. 29 Mulberry street, innkeeper, $30.
The Hon. John Van Buren was present during the sitting, having dropped in, as he said, to see how the Commissioners earned $3 per diem. He came, saw, and was evidently enlightened.
Commissioner Hackett moved that the Board adjourn to Friday next, at the usual hour, which was seconded by Commissioner Kerr.
Commissioner Holmes earnestly opposed the motion, on the ground that the Board had frequently given out that they would sit out the balance of the fifty days consecutively. They had already been repeatedly charged with obliquity in their official conduct, and this new arrangement would expose them to the additional charge of gross inconsistency.
Commissioner Hackett said he was disposed to give every man full opportunity to procure a license, and with that view was in favor of continuing the sittings of the Board until the 1st of January. He had learned that the Liquor Dealers' Association had prepared a case involving all the points at issue under the law, and would immediately put it on its road to the highest tribunal.
The Board then adjourned to Friday.
