Frisco Leads West. Div. Tittle's Play Nets 49ers A 35-31 Win

By MIKE RATHET

The Associated Press

Pro football's 30-year-old "man with the golden arm" San Francisco's Y. A. Tittle - today reflected on an opinion he expressed before the 1957 National Football League season began.

Speaking about a club that was experimenting at quarterback with former Michigan State star Earl Morrall and John Brodie, the outstanding rookie from Stanford.

Tittle said: "With all these young quarterbacks around I just hope I can make the ball club."

Today, Morrall is pitching em for Pittsburgh, Brodie rides the bench and Tittle, a 10-year NFL veteran, has led the 49ers to within striking distance of their first conference title.

Tittle directed all five scoring drives against Detroit Sunday, the last a 41-yard pass to R. C. Owens for the clincher with only 11 seconds remaining for a 35-31 victory over the Lions. That left the 49ers all alone atop the Western Division with a 5-1 mark. The Lions and Baltimore are tied for second at 3-3.

In the Eastern Division, the Cleveland Browns, led by Jimmy Brown and Tommy O'Connell, retained their grip in first place with a 21-17 defeat at Washington. The Browns are now 5-1.

The New York Giants 31-17 victors over Green Bay, and Pittsburgh, which took the measure of Baltimore, 19-13, remained a game behind with 4-2 records.

Chicago's Bears, preseason Western favorites, captured their second victory in six starts, overcoming Los Angeles 16-10, and Philadelphia eased past Chicago's Cardinals 38-21 in the league's other games.

Cleveland made good use of former Syracuse All-America Brown, who scored twice, and gained 109 yards in 21 tries. O'Connell, who made good on eight of 12 passes - and the absence of the Redskins' league-leading passer Eddie LeBaron who was injured in the second-quarter.

The Giants broke a 7-7 tie at Green Bay with 17 points in the second period. Green Bay charged back, but a brilliant goal line stand in which the Giants held for four downs on their own one with the score 24-17 in the final quarter, averted disaster.

Johnny Unitas chalked up his 15th scoring pass for the Colts, but Morrall notched two for the Steelers. Both Morrall throws went to end Ray Mathews, good for the win.

Rookie Jon Arnett went 98 yards for Los Angeles with the opening kickoff but three field goals by George Blanda and a 43-yard run with a recovered fumble by Dick Zucco gave the Bears their victory.

The Eagles picked up 17 points in the first 10 minutes and continued to romp against the Cards all afternoon.
