GOES ON TRIAL
IN ROBBERY CASE
ESSEX COUNTY COURT HOUSE, Elizabethtown, N. Y., Oct. 19. (UP)—Mysterious John Montague strode into court today to stand trial on charges that he committed robbery in the days before he made a new life for himself on the golf links and among the movie stars of Hollywood.
The man whose giant strength and incredible golfing ability made him a legend of the sports pages came back to a quiet village in the Adirondacks where seven years ago he was known as Laverne Moore, son of a steel worker. Pending against him in the county court here is a charge that he and three companions robbed Kin Hanna's roadhouse on the night of August 4, 1930, severely beat an elderly man and escaped with $800.
Montague, dressed in a gray doublebreasted suit, looked neither to right nor left as he walked into the courtroom with his lawyer, Jas. Noonan, of Albany, who once defended Dutch Schultz, notorious gangster.
Montague may be a nationally known figure, but the residents of Elizabethtown showed little interest in him. There were vacant seats in the small courtroom long after court convened.
Selection of a jury consumed most of the day. The defense challenged the first two veniremen called. Both the district attorney and Noonan questioned each venireman lengthily.
