A Democratic Victory in the Old Dominion!
The election in Virginia for members of Congress and of the State legislature has resulted in a brilliant triumph of the democrats of that State. The B. Atlas gives the Virginia whigs a terrible scold for suffering the "loco-focos" to make so clean a sweep. Tears are profusely shed over John Minor Botts.(whig candidate for Congress in the 6th district) "the gallant and true." as the Atlas calls him. Ye poor Botts is defeated. "And let the shame of it rest on those who might have prevented it, but did not " says the Atlas. But we think the poor coons have done as well as they could do, and that the Atlas is an unfeeling wretch to taunt them so. Taking into consideration the fact that the poor fellows had their hide so completely tanned in November, and that scarcely a vestige of coonery was then left visible, it is altogether beyond reason for the Atlas to expect anything different from the actual result of this election. It appears quite likely from the returns now in, that the Congressional delegation will consist of 14 democrats and one Whig, making a democratic gain of three members since the last congressional election. The Senate, which consists of 32 members, will probably be divided as follows, viz: 11 whigs, 21 democrats, or perhaps, 10 whigs, 22 democrats. The House of delegates, in which, last year the whigs had a majority of 16, the democratic nett gain, so far, is 8; making a democratic majority of 18 on joint ballot. It is believed, however that the remaining counties to be heard from will make a tie in the House. A democratic U. S. Senator in place of Wm. C. Rives, whose term of service has expired, will doubtless be secured.
