Families have been moving all day to more elevated positions on and near the bluffs. The tents furnished by Col. Whistler are at present the only shelter for the many families who have taken in the position and finally decided to move before a panic ensued....
Colonel Whistler has already furnished us with 400 rations of bread, and has ordered another batch for to-morrow, and also extended to the committee of safety the vacant quarters at Keogh for families desiring to get on the west side of Tongue river.....
The two large gorges still remain steadfast and loom up in the distance like mountains of ice and snow. The committee of safety think it advisable to allow the gorges to remain, as the river is apparently running smoothly and capable of carrying off the superfluous waters.
Messrs. Burchardt and McMillan, through the effects of powder and dynamite, have relieved the city of immense volumes of water by opening a channel on the west bank of the river.....
From noon up to five p. m. the water in the streets fell 7 1/2 inches. Boating is rather poor at the present stage, although men were seen building boats on the housetops, and actually sawing and splitting wood at that elevated position. The day has been a warm and bright one. Every one is of good heart and cheer. We hope we have seen the worst.. No serious damage has befallen any of us yet. The Yellowstone river is now running clear.
