Club For Under-Privileged Boys Is Kiwanis Plan

Steps that may soon result in the organization here of an active club for under-privileged boys were taken Tuesday night by the Elizabeth City Kiwanis club at its regular weekly meeting at the Virginia Dare hotel.

The matter was brought to the attention of the club by J. Henry LeRoy, Jr., district governor of the Carolinas Kiwanis district and chairman of the inter-club relations committee of the local club.

The entire evening's program was taken up with LeRoy's speech, which embraced a resume of Kiwanis objectives and activities, centering around Kiwanis' work with and for under-privileged boys and girls, and particularly boys.

After the meeting the board of directors of the club met and discussed the matter of sponsoring a boys' club here in Elizabeth City. They voted, after considerable discussion, to present the matter before the entire club at the next regular meeting, at which time it probably will be acted upon.

Last night's discussion of the boys' club project was prompted by a visit last week of Roy W. Montgomery, former governor of the Carolinas district and at present traveling secretary of the Boys Club Association of America, which is promoting the organization of more clubs for under-privileged boys, chiefly through Kiwanis clubs.

It was also voted at last night's meeting that the local club should invite the Portsmouth Kiwanis club to come here on Tuesday, September 29, for an inter-club meeting. The Portsmouth Kiwanians will bring along their own program, but this will be supplemented by the local club.
