Johnson Reluctantly Unloads Some
of the Plunder Taken From
His Wife.
Mr. Jas. K. Johnson, who was arrested Thursday for absconding with $2100 in money and valuables belonging to his wife, assured his friends that it was only a family matter which he would straighten up yesterday, but yesterday things took quite a different turn from what the prisoner anticipated. He stated to Detective Price when arrested that he made a certain disposition of his wife's watch and jewelry at Wichita Falls, and letters of inquiry were immediately dispatched to ascertain the truth of his representations.
The news came back yesterday that Mr. Johnson was simply the victim of a bad memory, or had drawn on his imagination for the statement. He was at once confronted with this reply and appeared completely nonplussed. Finally he owned up to having some of the jewelry still in his possession and gave an order to the detective on a certain place where they were on deposit for his wife's gold watch and chain and diamond ring, which were recovered. Together they are worth $500, which she is at least sure of saving out of her snug little fortune. The examining trial of Johnson has been set for Monday before Justice Nance.
He is still under arrest, not being able to give a $3000 bond.
