The Lincoln School House, on Fifth street near Market, was discovered to be on fire about three o'clock this morning, and an alarm was sounded and promptly responded to by the Department. It is believed that the building must have been set on fire by some malicious person. The fire was raging with great violence when the firemen arrived at the spot. The entire Department was called out, and for seven or eight hours several engines poured streams of water upon the flames, which however spread over the entire building, and were not suppressed until the edifice was left a noble ruin.
The fire originated in the basement of the structure.
The building was not burned down as was rumored to-day in the streets, but the roof was entirely consumed, and the sea of flame which rioted so long in the interior of the building was not subdued until all the contents were destroyed.
