The days of "blackberry winters" and those periodical
spring releases that have made the South famous for its fine
climatic conditions for this time of the year, apparently are
over for a while at least.
From out the mild weather of a Christmas season, we
were early to encounter the brisk rigors sending the mercury
down toward a record freeze.
The sunny South is noted for its mid-winter temptations,
for the wearing of summer apparel; the shucking of the coat
and other practices known to July and August (Once upon a
time, in points of deep South Georgia the cotton plants did
not die and neither did the leaves fall from the trees. This
was a winter of history and one long to be remembered and
loved.)
It will be recalled that last winter was also a record
breaker. The drop to a new low, made hundreds scurry to filling
stations to get added anti-freeze fluids for the automobile.
Those who are in doubt about what they have, had better
add more anti-freeze, as that is far cheaper than buying a
new motor.
In spite of the cold weather and its attendant privations
and handicaps, the sun shines bright and the weather is balmy.
It is hoped, however, that Russia's Lunik will not cut off the
glare of the sun as it squeezes about the ecliptic, hunting for
an orbit!
