his excellency governor Gage desired the selectmen of this town to attend him at the province house, when he informed them of that clause in the late act of parliament forbidding town meetings without special leave from the governor, and gave them the same to read, which being done, his excellency told them he was ready, on application, to give liberty for a town's meeting, if he should judge it expedient; and being told that the provincial law had been the rule of their conduct in these matters, he said he was determined to put the act of parliament into execution
