Full Text

A New Abutment. Chester News of Saturday.

Mr. J. L. Smith, in charge of the bridge repairing department on the P. W. & B. R. R., who has been at work for several weeks with a gang of men building trestles under the east end of the railroad bridge, over Chester creek, has so far completed the supports as to allow the masons to go to work Monday morning. The company propose to build a new abutment under the above-mentioned end, the old one being considered insufficient. The new one will be built of very heavy Port Deposit stone, and will be a superior piece of masonry. An engine will be used to hoist the mammoth stones. It is thought the masons will commence the work on Monday, and complete the abutment in about three weeks. The bridge will be used by trains as usual; the end under which the new work will be done has been strongly braced by heavy trestle work. So far as Mr. Smith has gone, he has done his work well.
