The Ohio State Journal alluding to the fact that one out of every eight marriages in Ohio ends in the divorce court, asks, what is the cause of it? It attributes this deplorable state of affairs to "the age in which we live, whose greatest concern seems to be excitement, pleasure, excess, selfishness, indifference we are taken off our feet and carried away, away from sober meditation and personal responsibilities life has become too extravagant and spectacular, and so simple a thing as marriage fails to fit in with the clamor and push." The only remedy for this is the recognition of the claims of religion which safeguard the sacred character of the marriage bond by insistence upon the permanence of the union it begets. "There is no use talking," adds this journal, "religion will have to become a regnant force in the hearts of the people, and marriage a definite part of it, before we reach solid ground."
