Full Text

Most of our readers have heard of Ex-Sheriff Parkins of London, and of his difficulties, and trials for slander and other matters, in this country. He has recently been mulcted in the sum of six thousand five hundred dollars damages and costs, for defamation of the character of Isabella Bard, of the city of New York.—The plaintiff is a widow woman, with several small children dependent on her for support.—Two or three years since the defendant became a lodger in her boarding house, and took a deep interest in her affairs. "Difficulties having arisen subsequently, he quitted her house and became a bitter enemy. It was in testimony of several witnesses, some of them of highly respectable character, that he had given her house a bad name, and herself a more worthless character. The epithets applied to her were too gross and indelicate to repeat in the report of the case. The defendant simply denied that he had traduced the character of the plaintiff, and offered no testimony in defence. The action was brought before the United States District Court of New York, and a verdict rendered as stated.—Mo. Repub.
