A Young Lady in Texas Meets a Horrible Death—How Her Father Tried to Save Her—A Wonderful Display of Nerve and Skill.
Comfort, Tex., Jan. 21.—Miss Eliza Korger, aged sixteen, whose parents reside near here, met with a singular death yesterday. She went to the stable to release several horses, and one of the animals became frightened and dashed out of the stable. The rope became entangled around Miss Korger's neck and she was dragged off. Her mother saw the accident and screamed. Her father, who is a pioneer, and, like all of the old settlers, a wonderful shot with the rifle, sprang up as the maddened animal tore from the house and grasped the weapon that hung above the bed. When he reached the door the horse was seventy-five yards away, and going like the wind. In the hope of saving his child old Korger leveled the gun and fired. At the crack of the weapon the horse sprang in the air and rolled end over end, shot through the heart. The girl, however, was quite dead when picked up. It was evident that she must have been instantly killed by the first bound of the horse.
