FOR THE COUNTY POST.
THE CHIEF MAGISTRACY.
As the approaching election appears to be exciting much interest in different parts of the State, and as the time is now at hand, when our citizens will be called upon to exercise the invaluable privileges of a free government; it may not be improper to call the attention of the public to an unexpected measure, adopted during the last session of the Legislature, by an assemblage of the members in secret conclave, to remove our present Chief Magistrate from office; and to substitute in his place a member of Congress, in opposition to the wishes of the friends of the present Executive, who are believed to comprise a large majority of the Electors of the State.
It is now well understood that the assemblage referred to, was induced to adopt this measure in consequence of a communication made to them, by a gentleman from this county, that Gov. Wolcott declined being a candidate for re-election: a communication which is well known to have been unauthorised, and is believed to have originated in a misapprehension of the wishes and motives of Gov. Wolcott: and we take the liberty of saying that our present Chief Magistrate, having been called to the first station in the gift of the people of this State, without the remotest interference on his part, has pursued, and will pursue the same line of conduct with respect to continuance in office; and will, if it be desired by the Electors, devote his time and talents to the executive duties in discharging which, he has been eminently successful. Entertaining as we do a high opinion of Gov. Wolcott as a man of ability, probity, and honour, in the full possession of all his faculties, venerable for his years, and the invaluable services which he has rendered the republic, who was the associate of Washington & Adams, participated largely in their councils and aided them in laying the foundations of our most valuable institutions, who has discharged the duties of his present office with ability, firmness, and impartiality, and who has kept aloof from every species of intrigue, and has emphatically been the Governor of the State and not of a party; it is not without pain we witness an effort to drive him from our public Councils, and to deprive the State of services, for which no adequate substitute will be obtained. It is confidently expected however that a different result will be accomplished by the Electors at the polls; and while it will be no part of the policy of the friends of Mr. Wolcott to impeach the motives of others, we wish it to be understood that they intend to give him a support, the features of which will be firmness and liberality, and the event we hope, entire success.
